How to Save Money Using Price Comparison Sites

Saving money on a car insurance renewal, is it really possible? Below is a true story. As a busy Mummy, sometimes things do slip through the net or in my case the reminder letter get moved by my young Daughter.  My car insurance renewal letter came in the post a few weeks before my renewal was due. My car has seen better days and I thought best to wait to see if my car passed its MOT before checking on insurance prices. I left the letter out so I would not forget, but whoops I left it in reach of my little one and that was it hidden in one of her sneaky hiding places. So, I forgot all about my renewal....

My bank statement came in the post and there it was, my payment for my car insurance. Damn it I forgot all about it, it was how much now? It had gone up much more than last year, so I thought to check on some comparison sites to see if I could get a better deal. I always use price comparison sites when it comes to buying insurance. I logged in and entered my details, and sure enough my quote came up £150 cheaper and that was with my current insurer and also another company! Are you kidding me I thought, my own insurer is showing cheaper. What’s that all about?

I then phoned my insurer and asked if they could look into the renewal price that I had been charged. I explained that I wanted to cancel my policy as I had seen a competitor with a cheaper price. I also mentioned that I had seen a quote from them online that was cheaper too. Guess what? My Insurer wanted to avoid me cancelling my policy (which I was entitled to do at no charge within 14 days of renewal), so offered me a cheaper price. How much cheaper you ask? Did they match the price I had seen online? No, it was even cheaper, £180 cheaper! I could not believe it, just spending a few minutes online and then on the phone I had got £180 back in my bank account.  If you are wondering how this is possible, the operator advised that it worked out cheaper to register me as a new customer and not a renewal customer.  Who cares I thought, as long as I am getting money back. However, it does go to show do not just accept the renewal price that you are given, get online and get comparing.

Personally, I use a few comparison sites, as it can throw up some different prices and offers. What is really useful is that you can save all your details on each website, so you don’t need to re-enter them each year when your renewal is due.

Here are a few of the sites I recommend:

I would love to know how much money you have saved using price comparison sites, so please let me know!

How to make money with your shopping receipts

#How to make money with shopping receipt

Getting Started

This is one of the easiest ways to make money out of little bits of paper that you will already accumulate from your weekly shopping. So how does it work? Well it is simply scanning your shopping receipts from anything you have bought within the last two weeks onto a number of apps on your mobile phone. For each receipt scanned you will be awarded points. And what do points make? Prizes! Yes, a variety of them, payments can be made in Amazon e-vouchers or payment via PayPal. It really is that easy and you can even scan the receipts while keeping your little one happy by sitting next to them and pretending to watch Peppa pig for the umpteenth time.

There are a number of apps that are free to download to your smartphone and once registered you can start using straight away. All receipts must be dated within the last two weeks and make sure that you do not scan the same receipt twice. You will receive a notification of any errors with receipts, such as a blurry image, so make sure that you keep the receipts a few days in case you need to re-scan them. If you have long receipts you can take multiple pictures to ensure the full receipt is captured.

Shopprize UK

This app is my favourite as it is the highest rewarding. My current average earning is about £10.00 a month in Amazon vouchers, which I am saving up to spend on Christmas presents. I am not spending any more money at shops than I normally would, just scanning the receipts from my purse onto the app. This app only allows 5 scans a day, but you can just scan any additional receipts the next day. You also get a daily reward bonus just by opening the app up each day, so you will see your points go up quite quickly. There are also daily draws that you can enter to win prizes, each entry costs different amounts of coins. You will need to collate 10000 coins to earn 1 £5.00 Amazon E-Voucher.

To get you started if you join by using my referral link below to download the app, you will get 200 extra coins added to your Shopprize account straight away:

Receipt Hog

Again, you just need to scan your shopping receipts and you get awarded coins. Some receipt scans will give you spins on the ‘hog slots’, (a spin on a bandit) to win more coins. There is a limit of 3 receipts with the same date from the same retailer, just in case you had the idea of splitting your shopping up to get more receipts. Payment is made by PayPal, of which you need 1500 coin for a £5.00 pay out and Amazon of which you need 1000 coins for a £3.00 pay out. I personally found it did take longer to get a pay out from this app, but it all depends on the number of receipts you have and how lucky you are with the hog slots.

To get started with Receipt Hog just download the app from your app store and input the following code to get free extra spins on the hog slots: taz82380

So, grab your purse and get scanning all those receipts and watch your points start to add up and quickly turn into free cash or vouchers.
