How to Save Money Using Price Comparison Sites

Saving money on a car insurance renewal, is it really possible? Below is a true story. As a busy Mummy, sometimes things do slip through the net or in my case the reminder letter get moved by my young Daughter.  My car insurance renewal letter came in the post a few weeks before my renewal was due. My car has seen better days and I thought best to wait to see if my car passed its MOT before checking on insurance prices. I left the letter out so I would not forget, but whoops I left it in reach of my little one and that was it hidden in one of her sneaky hiding places. So, I forgot all about my renewal....

My bank statement came in the post and there it was, my payment for my car insurance. Damn it I forgot all about it, it was how much now? It had gone up much more than last year, so I thought to check on some comparison sites to see if I could get a better deal. I always use price comparison sites when it comes to buying insurance. I logged in and entered my details, and sure enough my quote came up £150 cheaper and that was with my current insurer and also another company! Are you kidding me I thought, my own insurer is showing cheaper. What’s that all about?

I then phoned my insurer and asked if they could look into the renewal price that I had been charged. I explained that I wanted to cancel my policy as I had seen a competitor with a cheaper price. I also mentioned that I had seen a quote from them online that was cheaper too. Guess what? My Insurer wanted to avoid me cancelling my policy (which I was entitled to do at no charge within 14 days of renewal), so offered me a cheaper price. How much cheaper you ask? Did they match the price I had seen online? No, it was even cheaper, £180 cheaper! I could not believe it, just spending a few minutes online and then on the phone I had got £180 back in my bank account.  If you are wondering how this is possible, the operator advised that it worked out cheaper to register me as a new customer and not a renewal customer.  Who cares I thought, as long as I am getting money back. However, it does go to show do not just accept the renewal price that you are given, get online and get comparing.

Personally, I use a few comparison sites, as it can throw up some different prices and offers. What is really useful is that you can save all your details on each website, so you don’t need to re-enter them each year when your renewal is due.

Here are a few of the sites I recommend:

I would love to know how much money you have saved using price comparison sites, so please let me know!
